Life changes - Appalachian Trail

I am just curious. I have read a few of the journals where a hiker would comment on the trail not haveing a life changeing effect on him/her. I would like to know in what way did hiking the trail have an effect on you. What change from who you were before the hike to who you are now. I hav’nt yet hiked the trail but I plan to in 2004. I just can’t see that the trail would not effect anyone or change them. I see it effecting me in many ways and that I will most likely be a changed person afterwards. Any comments on this?

Once you get in to your groove, what ever that may be, and you feel your self as a thru hiker you will know what it meens to be a long distance hiker. Its kind of like hitting the sound barrier. A sudden rush when you pull your first 20 or 25. When you laugh you ass off over spilt Ramen. Its a weird feeling when all this happens, from newbie to pro. To not feel like a dunce when you light your stove. Now you have time to go with the flow. You have become one with the Trial…and many others to follow. You will realize that you have graduated and are now a part of something very cool. Go get yours. I can’t tell you how it feels, you’ll have to see for yourself.:cheers

Bushwack, Great journal. Read it once, I am reading it again. I can say this for a life changing experience and that is when I did a one week minimalist trip on the Ozarks Highlands Trail in 88’. With a small bottle of water, a can of soup, a fork and knife and a blanket rolled up in a duff bag, I pretty lived off of what I found along the way. I am not going to say here for it may give some readers the willies. But all and all I had a great trip, would do it again, and I was never the same. Gave me a great perspective on what we can live with and live with out. that was only for a week. Now here I am looking at a 6 month challenge. WOW!!! WooooHoooo!!!8)

Bushwack, The HighLands Trail is great. Very solitude. The times I have gone up there I never saw anyone. Towns are far in between and there is plenty of water. Lot of springs. The Highlands Assc. has a great guide book with good tips. Should check it out. They also have a web site but I do not remember the Address. Just put Ozark Highlands trail in your search engine. It will come out. My understanding is that they are extending the trail to ST.Louis, MO. Should be a great extension. I highly recommend the trail. Not as high as the AT but still alot of PUD’s. :pimp
