Lightweight Filter

So, those of you looking for a lightweight water filter, I just got the new MSR Hyperflow. I think it just came out in the last couple weeks. It weighs 7.8 ounces and it pumps like a champ. And it is easy to use with a platypus reservoir OR a Nalgene with it’s removable adaptor tips. We’ll see how it holds up after a couple of months on the PCT, but right now it looks pretty sweet!

You just decreased my base weight by 9 ounces.

Yo bro, is that a Level 1 filter? Saw it in the gear mags but forgot. Makes water fast? My Hiker is busticated.

I don’t know what level 1 is, but it filters down to 0.2 microns, which will filter out the usual nasties. There is no charcoal filter, so it won’t filter out chemicals.

My Hiker isn’t busticated, but it weighs 17 ounces.

A little heavier but very convienent is the gravity filter. It comes in around 9 ounces but requires no pumping. It is essentially a pur hiker filter connected to some sil-nylon and a tube. I used on on my AT thur-hike last year and had great results. Good luck.

Wow that thing is pretty small. I wonder if it has the same square footage as some of the other cartidge systems or if it will crap out sooner. It would be good to get a post trip report.

They recommend back flushing the filter after every 8 liters of water.

That may mean it gets clogged pretty fast, but it can be back flushed in the field without tools.

You also have to prevent it from freezing. (That may be true for any filter.) Nights on the PCT can get pretty cold. You wouldn’t want to leave it out at night.

I am playing with it at my kitchen sink.

This pump seems to be difficult to back flush. With the check valves reversed, it does not want to draw water through the filter backwards.

Re-reading the directions, I see the problem. When you disassemble the pump to reverse the check valves, try not to pump any air into the filter. Pump water through the filter first, so that the filter is full of water. The reverse the check valves without drawing any air into the filter. This makes back flushing easier. This is pretty easy to do, if you think about what you are doing,

The pump comes with an adapter to fit Nalgene bottles and Camel Back style bladders. If you are using Gatorade bottles instead, you will have to fill your pot with clean water, and submerge the outlet of the pump into the pot when you back flush it. You would only want to do this if your pot is clean. After about 5 pumps, you will need to top off the pot with water to keep the outlet submerged.

So far it seems like a nice filter.

Hey Scott, do you know if you can use it with a platypus bladder?

I don’t have a platypus to try it with.

If the platypus has a fill spout that the adapter fits on to or you can push the platypus tube onto the outlet of the pump or you can hold the fill spout of the platypus under the pump’s outlet while you pump, then it will work.

Unless the adapter fits the platypus, you would not be able to backflush from the platypus.

Looking at a picture of a platypus on the REI site, I don’t think the adapter will fit the platypus. The adapter is designed to fit wide mouth Nalgene bottles or MSR bladders.

It kicks butt. This is my 4th filter I’ve tried and my last.
