Lion King’s 2003 Documentary

I just wanted to let folks know that Lion King is near completion of his documentary…like a week near!

He sent me an advanced copy…and wow! I tore into it immediately and was just glued to the set. I rarely knew whether I wanted to laugh or cry and usually did some combination of both. It is hard to watch. Faces, memories, events just explode like a bomb in your emotions. It was kinda like seeing an old fling that you never really got over. I can say this class of 03…we are so lucky to have our year in that format. I mean…I have looked through the pics I took and read through mine and others’ journals…but talk about brining it home. Lion King did a great job of capturing the feel of the trail….Mindless monotony, exuberance of town, hitchless thumbing, shelter life, rock and rain, and people…the goodness of people at their best- its all there jumping out at you! I have had a hard time keeping myself from watching it too many times. I am so glad not only to have that record of the journey, but also another tool to try to explain to those loved ones what the trail was…and is. Thank you Lion King!

Thanks for the update Last Minute, and especially Lion King for putting it all together! I spoke with Carolina Cruiser a few days ago and it sounds like his documentary will be done within a month or so. Can’t wait to see them both!

Im glad you enjoyed it, and I hope it gets packaged and all before Christmas, as I have about 100 pre-orders from folks who have seen it at different levels of completion.

It will be screening a major festival in January, just have to find out about the details a little more…PCT in 05…hopefully.

Thanks to all involved and who were a part of the trip.
I make no bones about this NOT being a thru-hike(Although it goes from GA-ME), as I missed miles for ankle injuries which plagued me till the very end, and said screw it to a section in PA…money, time and wet heavy ass camera gear made a big diference on the whole thing, but it isnt about me(Although my commentary is there along with my happiness, grumpiness etc…), it is about the ability for any and all who travel and the ups and downs of life as we make our way without fear through the Country(Or life). Living in freedom, laughing, meeting different people, and experiancing the ability to think, and be free…like we truly should be.

It has many thru-hikers, many section hikers, many purists(Whom I know are not purists, but hey, to each his own, as I am the leader of the hike your own hike squad)

I have a great love for the AT, the life it shows, and the healing that comes along with the suffering that we all get to experiance be it for 2 months, or 6. Be it a thru-hike, a thru-hitch, or a section of the trail that we need to touch again.

There are a lot of folks who try to control or decide what a hike is, how it should be done, why thier way is the only way, and this turns what the trail is into something else entirely.

NO ONE can make the rules for you to follow as far as the actual style of travel goes, they can cry and bitch and moan and tell you why your way is wrong and what makes them right, but the thing is…we are all suppoused to see things in our own light without a mirror of someone elses personality controling what we get out of our choices.

Freedom, without a care in the world about what the guy/girl five miles ahead or behind you think about how you are experiancing this massive journey.

Maybe those who preach so heavily have forgotten what it means to be free.

Maybe not.

Is this a film? or a collection of prints wet to music? How was this done? I am thinking that it would be timeless if it is a film… because the trail is the trail no matter what year you do it.

Well…its a 'ride; for a lack of a better word.
It has numerous different hikers discussing things, it has every state, every animal you see (with the exception of Moose sad to say), The Mental ups and downs, town people, hikers partying to gether, blood, sweat, tears, beers, trail magic, lots of humor, snow, rain, sunshine, the beauty of the whites, and the drastic changes that can happen out here at any moment, mainly it is about the experiance of being out here…what it isnt is a guide, or a how to.

Its kinda the way the trail shows us the importance and the reinstilation of faith in human kind and of our personal ability to take what the trail dishes out in all forms, with the rewards of every inch of beauty in all its ways that we as travelers are blessed with.

It shows that the world is full of wonderful strangers, and that if the time is taken, the experiance you get is amazing when you live free and drop the fear…but still listen to the gut.

It was shot on a Canon GL2, edited on a <MAc with final cut pro 4…which I taught myself how to use during th eprocess…that was the hardest part.
It has a killer soundtrack, and I am pleased with the results.
