Freebird and all, throwing my pack in the ring. Will start NOBO in Apr with a possibility of flipping at Cumbres to Glacier. Being a Florida girl, want to avoid as much ice as possible.

If you flip to Glacier in early June, you will still need an ice axe. You’ll find snow in the Montana mountains until the beginning of July. The Montana mountains are lower, but they get a lot of snow and it doesn’t melt out until mid to late June.

Thanks Ginny. Hopefully starting in late Apr will hit Cumbress mid jun, but watching snow and will shift start time (or will go play somewhere while waiting for snow/ice melt).

Looks like Rain Queen and I are going to be starting with the south bound crowd from Canada mid-June. We have two months to point our toes in one direction and hike…should be fun, see you all out there

Hey Double Cabin,

Thanks for the update and thoughts about bears. I always carry bear spray in bear country. But I never thought of carrying an air horn. What is the thinking on this? How and when would one give a blast of the air horn?

Thanks for your thoughts.

On last year’s CDT hike I didn’t carry bear spray or an air horn nor have I ever carried bear spray in bear country. For peace of mind you might want to carry bear spray, but to carry both most hikers would consider overkill. I can yell if I need to, and I have yelled at a few bears!

Call Glacier before you flip up there… I arrived in early june & was not allowed a permit cuz camps were still melting out… next year, after doing the Bitterroute bypass, from Whitehall thru Virginia city to West Yellowstone; I started out at Canada border in early July & had an ez time of it; except for the ridiculous situation of short hikers using up all the backcountry campsites near Mary’s lake I think & I was issued a 9 mile day then a 29 mile day or something ridiculous like that; needless to say, I didn’t make it& stealth camped one nite. I used bear-resistant bags you can hang from a tree if there aint no where to hang your food. See my journal for 2-med & Glacier Park info…

We’re heading NoBo on May 1st from Crazy Cook and flipping to GNP after the San Juans somewhere around Buena Vista, Co and going south bound back down to BV.

There’s a good chance we’ll see almost all the NoBo’s but will probably miss the SoBo’s(except for SoBo’s with a late start).

We’re almost 2 months away…
