I’m wondering who else is planning to thru-hike the CDT in '09? Maybe list trail name, direction, and approximate start date.
Looking forward to meeting some of you on the Trail!

Is this the same freebird that hiked the pct in 05. I think your hiking partner was Bama.
wanderlust
I’m not good at planning, but the CDT is the Trail I’m shooting for in '09. I was supposed to do it this year, but got impatient and went and walked another Trail that I could start a little earlier in the year.
I figured I’d start talking to a few friends who have already walked the CDT and go with their advice on start dates and hopefully learn from them a few things to expect along the way.
Stumpknocker
Yes, Wanderlust its the same freebird - but i never hiked with Bama. I hiked for about a month with Smack.
Hey Stumpy - I thought that you only hiked the ‘wet’ trail!’:)’ I promise i won’t talk to you for more than two hours if we run into eachother on the CDT.
Anyone else?
freebird
Hey Freebird, you know me…I’ll ALWAYS stop and talk for a couple hours. Heck, there will probably be a lot of coffee shops all up and down the CDT where we could plan on meeting everyday for a chat. :happy
Stumpknocker
Keep dreaming on those coffeeshops, Stumpknocker. In Montana, you’re lucky to have a gas station in town. New Mexico isn’t looking any better on that account. Trust me; I’m out here right now. Yogi forgot to mention that the “large grocery store” in town closed two winters ago. It’s a beauty of a trail, though.
Selena aka wing it
I will be hiking with Teatree, NAFTA and Luna. Starting in Canada and heading south. Looking to start in mid-late June.

Trowler, Big Cat, Keystone and Jorden all PCT 06ers are planning a NOBO starting May 1st. See yall out there.

There is an outside chance I’ll be on the CDT next summer, starting in Waterton and heading south for some unspecified amount of time. Currently, the plan is to go to the Himalaya for 3 months, but reading Lint’s 07 CDT journal and my time on the PNT this summer are starting to change my mind.
Suge
I’m also planning to be out there in '09. Not sure of direction or departure yet. Most likely southbound but waiting to see what the winter holds. Can’t wait!
Gesh
My name is Joel AKA The Backpacking Biologist or BioGuy. I am planning a hike of the CDT southbound with a start in June-July. My trip is still in the planning stages, I intend to hike Wyoming and Colorado at minimum, and will possibly be adding the more Northern sections as my planning continues. I am a lightweight backpacker and my current kit weighs about 25 lbs without food. I am not looking for a full-time partner, but I would like to hike with a partner for a week somewhere along the way, and I want to meet other long distance hikers along the way for lunch, etc.
BioGuy
Howdee Hikers. I can’t cover the miles most of you do but warmer months I am home outside Dubois, WY. I’ve given some of you rides or beer, but not as many this past year as I thought I would after making this offer before.
Unless I miraculously got a job elsewhere (LOL) I plan on hiking the Buffalo Plateau again and other trips as well as some guiding work and work here on the Ranch and I know folks never know the exact schedule they’re going to have but if I am available at the time and you give me a little notice from your cell phone I can help folks at Union Pass, Togwotee, or Brooks Lake before or after you head into or through the remotest part of your trail . I often head over to the Climbers Ranch on the weekend and can offer sane people a shower, bunk, etc. if our place NW of Dubois isn’t packed. If no bunk we’ve got a lawn for tents. Sometimes a great meal too. You never know.
FYI folks Grizzly encounters here in the Southwest GYE might be up dramatically next year. Not to scare anyone but we have a whole lot of Whitebark Pine Stands [significant source of protein for both Grizzlies and Black Bears]that are dieing or dead. Some of you may have read two Grizzly cubs were shot in October. A Sow was also shot earlier in that month. I can tell you I saw Grizzlies at 11K on the Buffalo Plateau this past September 27 and down at or below 8,000 feet multiple times over the summer and most recently a couple of weeks ago just a mile and a half from my place here.
Do hike your own hike I’m just gonna respectfully suggest all of you consider a combination of bear spray and air horn.
So, have wonderful walks folks,
Double Cabin
Hey all, I CanyonMan hope to hike this year SoBo but must climb out of PCT debt before this will be realistic. If not this year, next year for sure. Good luck to all and hope to see y’all out there!!!
CanyonMan
I will be hiking the CDT in 2009 beginning in April sometime and going northbound. I will begin with Troll and Oblivious. I am keeping a trail journal and I look forward to meeting many of you whom I already know.

Freebird, I am going NOBO some time in April. If you recall, you and I met when I was thru hiking the Long Trail with Flutter this past Fall. See you when we pass each other by.
Shout out to NAFTA and Teatree (and all the other PCT 07’ers).
Shout out also to Bama, met you on the AT in 05 (if it is you, you have a tat designed by Fishin Fred on your calve) Also, I picked you up in my truck when you hitch hiked out of Tuolumne Meadows in 06.
Trowler, I hope to see you and Keytone out there as well. We all met at the Andersons on my PCT 07 thru (there I witnessed the infamous oil wrestling event. Never laughed so hard in my life). You guys rock!
Troll and Oblivious. See you two out there as well. You two still plan a split season? Say hey to Anchor for me. I miss you guys.
To all you other hikers out there, enjoy life!!! FYI, I am pulling the trail name out of retirement and using it for at least one more hike. What can I say, it fits me well (ha). Peace, WB
Wilderness Bob
I hope to start a northbound thru hike of the CDT sometime in April…will like to chat with others who are planning to hike also.
JB
Hey WB - never saw you again before the Canadian border… I spent my last night in the Jay Peak Gondola building…
Trowler, Suge, Gesh, Bio Guy, CanyonMan, Ladybug, and JB - hope to see y’all on the Trail somewhere!
Happy Trails, freebird
