Lodging in Hanover---Major News

This might be of particular interest to the Class of 2002: The major place that has taken in hiker guests over the years in Hanover, the Tabard residence hall will NOT, repeat NOT be doing so this year. Hikers wishing to stay overnight in town will need to make other plans.

(Anyone interested in more info on this, including alternative lodging ideas should check out extended post on the subject at http://at.plangraphics.org (see “Trail Towns” section of forum under “Hanover”)

I do not know at prsent which (if any) of the Dartmouth dorms will be taking in hikers this year, but I'll pass this information along as I get it.

Baltimore Jack,

If there is no place to stay in Hanover, wouldn’t that force hikers to stay in White River Junction or Lebanon, quite a ways from the trail? Unless someone has big bucks to stay in the Hanover Inn, which I think is 300 a night, I don’t think there has ever been an alternative to staying in the dorms.

You can catch the bus in Hanover to WRJ ($1.50) where there’s a hostel. Bus ride is 15-20 minutes. I stayed there for $29. I think that is per room not per person. WRJ is more of a ‘working class’ town & I found it more hospitable than Hanover. Plenty of places to eat & drink, affordably too.

Tabbard was not taking hikers last year when I came through, but after trying several other frats that are listed as being open to taking hikers, one, alpha tau proved to be. Thanks to them. I was early (mid may) and most frats had yet to vote that year to see if they’d continue with the service. I think even though tabbard is not going to be open, that’s not to say others are not, as long as hikers are respectful, there should be lodging options in Hanover. Just check at the Dartmouth Outting Club office once in town. If there are no other options, you can either head to White River Junction if you really want, or I’d think also that you could camp out in the shelter just north of town by about a mile if I recall (don’t remember the name) May be able to grab a free shower at the YMCA. As I recall though, it was close enough that you could chill there at night and spend a day in town.

I don’t know what the other 2 frats are planning to do; in all likelihood, they haven’t decided either, but at the very least, it’s going to be tough to get a spot there in any case, as Tabard used to take at least 50% of the hikers passing thru, meaning there’ll be great pressure on the other houses; at the very least, I expect them to get VERY strict in re. to house rules, number of guests, length of stay, etc. And at worst, they may realize that with Tabard gone, then they’re going to be overwhelmed by thru-hikers; they may decide to follow suit. In any case, this is all speculative, as the students in the other houses have yet to make up their minds on summer policies. As I said, if and when I hear more about this from friends on campus, I’ll pass the news along.

As to other accomodation possibilities, I’ve never stayed in White River; I know nothing about the hostel, but there are several reasonably priced motels. West Lebanon has a few moderately priced motels and is also aaccessible by shuttle bus. (Incidentally the bus service connecting the local towns is now FREE thanx to a grant from the College). There’s NO cheap lodging in Norwich, and nothing directly in Hanover either, other than the pricey Hanover Inn. Two other motels, the Chieftain and the Autumn Inn are both about a mile walk from downtown, with rooms probably in the 75-100 dollar a night range, tho it may be cheaper in the summer when the town is pretty quiet and college is in limited session. Information on all local lodging is available in the Yellow Pages which are available anywhere.

As far as tenting, one has several possibilities—if you follow the Trail North, thru town, you cut left after the Food Co-op and go along the edge of an athletic field. In the woods at the end of the field are several campsites, and there are many more as you proceed North towards Velvet Rocks shelter. One could very easily tent for the night, and then backtrack a few tenths in the morning to do your town stuff.

If you do decide to tent, a few words of advice:

*Stay in the woods at the edge of the field, and not in the athletic field itself, unless you want a visit from the Police
*Don’t leave your tent pitched and your gear untended there while you do your town stuff; this area gets a lot of foot traffic
*If you’re planning to stay near or at Velvet Rocks, bring water from town as it’s almost always dry there by mid-summer, when most folks are passing thru.

The Panarchy House was taking us last year, in the basement, but dought they would have even noticed you by the condition of the place. Have you seen Animal House?

if i had to guess why Tabbard isn’t taking in hikers this year it would be because of a guy by the name of BigBird,he caused alot of trouble there last year around the 4th of july, including almost lighting the place on fire with his assortment of fire works. hey B&B,if you thought Panarchy was crazy you should have dropped into Tabbard on any given night! do you know how to play Beer Pong? or how about the wednesday night meetings?

Yeah, we heard about Pong. We got the details from “Sleep-pee or P.O.W” aka Twig. As you might recall he was drunk and walked up to the walk and took a leak and said something like “P#*@ on you, Springer” and went back to bed.
