Logistics info on 100 Mile Wilderness and Mt. Katahdin

I’m planning to fly to Maine in September with the goal of climbing Mt Katahdin and hiking the 100 Mile Wilderness. I’m looking for logistics advice on how to accomplish this. I’m prepared to climb Mt Katahdin first or last; start in Monson or Baxter State Park. Should I fly to Portland and drive to one end? Is there a shuttle service that I can use?
Thanks,
Donn

You can fly to Portland and then take a bus to Medway, which is about four or five miles from Millinocket. They have a pretty good taxi service there. Not sure if there is a bus stop in Monson or not. If I were doing it, I’d try to climb Mt Katahdin last, not first. It’s a pretty hard climb if you’re aren’t in good shape.

You can contact Buddy & Jill Ward in Monson. They run 7 Pines Shuttle Service.

Great people and rates.

You can also fly to Bangor, bus it to Medway (arrives ~7:30pm), and then get shuttled by the folks @ the AT Cafe and Lodge - Paul and Jaime (Ole Man & NaviGator) who can also put you up for the night.

Hike south through the park or from Abol Bridge (stop, say hi to me the Ridgerunner) and when you get to Monson get shuttled back to Millinocket and finish up. I agree, do Katahdin last. The women from Shaw’s can also shuttle you north. There are a lot of options, it’s not as difficult as it may sound.

For a reunion hike in 2004 I arranged to have (2) float planes fly us to Crawford Pond. Then it was a 70 mile (I think) hike to Katahdin. We flew into Bangor, took taxis to the air field (lake) and they flew us to Crawford from there for something like $110 per person. Very cool flight, alot of fun. While we were on the trail my wife flew to Bangor, rented a van and picked us up at Baxter. Worked out very well. Within a 10 day period we flew to Maine, hiked 70 miles and had some of the group back home and back to work.

…the best hitch I got was nine at night as a mud covered thruhiker with my headlamp on by a sweet woman with Christian music on the radio and she moved the child carrier to make room for my pack, and dropped me off at the only place selling food and beer, to where we imagined Kathadin like it were Nirvana, the New World, the reason, the end of all this (for the moment), yes, go north young man…
