Long Trail Vets

I have a resupply plan for the first 200 miles or so, just wondered if you vets could cast your eyes over it and let me know what you think.

North Adams to Manchester Center 58.8 miles. Resupply Manchester P.O or Supermarket?

Manchester Center to Inn at Long Trail 47.9 miles. Maildrop to the Inn and spend the night!

Inn at Long Trail to Jonesville 78.7 miles. Resupply P.O Jonesville.

Jonesville to VT108 25 miles. Meet wife.

Any comments appreciated.

In Manchester Center, I’d resupply at the supermarket. It’s a real supermarket. No need for a mail drop unless you have special needs.

Also, don’t take Manchester Center personally. Some do. Some of the natives are a little burned out on thruhikers, as the AT hits it too.

I happened to have a lovely time there.
But then I chose to.

I just got off the trail at jonesville after hiking from north Adams. Your plan is workable but you could definitely keep some weight out of your food bag by resupplying more often, especially between Route 4 (Inn At Long Trail) and Jonesville. You can get to Middlebury very easily at VT 125 and you can get to Waitsfield very easily from Lincoln Gap or Appalacian Gap. You definitely want to keep your pack weight down over the Lincoln Ridge, going up from App Gap and over Burnt Rock Mountain and Camel’s Hump. In Jonesville you can hitch about 6 miles west to Williston yo a great grocery store. Good luck!

Manchester has a super market there. super easy place to walk through. easy to hitch too. i recomend maxwells flat land grille for a bite to eat and some local flavor.

Inn at long trail is nice. if you are staying there you can get a bus pass to Rutland. the bus is the diamond express and leaves and picks up right at the inn. This was the best grocery that i visited. very close to the station, movie theater (in rain perhaps :)) a tobacco shop, hand made wooden toy store. very cool place. also the inn has a sweet hiker box. Oct will be solid though, i hear its a 3 day $400 minimum to stay. check out the hostels in rutland also. inn was a superb place.

Jonesville: just the PO. nice hiker box there too. oh yeah, soda machine at the harley store, you can see it from the PO!

Johnson: Hitch into town. good enough grocery store. it will do. products can be dusty at times but its all good. Tavern at Long Trail is the place to stay. they will let you take a shower in the back and sleep by the fire ring in the backyard. Probably the absolute best secret until you hike and hear it place to go.

i know of other hikers that hitched in from lincoln gap and that worked out for them. or even montgomery… ive also heard of backpackers hitching to town at every gap and just carrying a bit of snacks. gap hopping and sleepin in the mountains.

good luck
