Manchester has a super market there. super easy place to walk through. easy to hitch too. i recomend maxwells flat land grille for a bite to eat and some local flavor.
Inn at long trail is nice. if you are staying there you can get a bus pass to Rutland. the bus is the diamond express and leaves and picks up right at the inn. This was the best grocery that i visited. very close to the station, movie theater (in rain perhaps :)) a tobacco shop, hand made wooden toy store. very cool place. also the inn has a sweet hiker box. Oct will be solid though, i hear its a 3 day $400 minimum to stay. check out the hostels in rutland also. inn was a superb place.
Jonesville: just the PO. nice hiker box there too. oh yeah, soda machine at the harley store, you can see it from the PO!
Johnson: Hitch into town. good enough grocery store. it will do. products can be dusty at times but its all good. Tavern at Long Trail is the place to stay. they will let you take a shower in the back and sleep by the fire ring in the backyard. Probably the absolute best secret until you hike and hear it place to go.
i know of other hikers that hitched in from lincoln gap and that worked out for them. or even montgomery… ive also heard of backpackers hitching to town at every gap and just carrying a bit of snacks. gap hopping and sleepin in the mountains.
good luck
