Long trails in the Appalachians

I was thinking of hiking a few long-distance trails.

Basically, it would be of AT length (in terms of time and total mileage).

The trails I’d be hiking are

Pinhoti Trail
Benton McKeye Trail
Mountains to Sea Trail (at least the completed part)
Finger Lakes Trail
Long Trail
Les Sentiers Frontaliers (maybe)
Cohos Trail
International Appalachian Trail

Yeah, that might be one hell of a hike (certainly more than 2,000 miles). I’ll let you know if it ever happens . . .

But the question is, what about trails in VA or PA? I don’t mean short ones, like the Creeper Trail, but . . . it has to be somewhat longer.

Anyone know of any?

Uhm, what I meant to say is that I plan to hike all of those trails in ONE season.

Kind of like an AT thru-hike. I’d be in the Appalachian Mountain Range, anyways.

Check out the tuscarora trail and the alleghany trail for a route that will bring you through the VA-WVA-MD-PA region. Best of luck.

There is a way to make a figure eight trek out of a pair of loop trails in PA, the Susquehannock Trail System and the Black Forest Trail in Central PA. as a pair of link trails join the two. This would make for an approxiamtely 135 - 140 mile hike - and you end up where you started which is great for logistics. Both trails are fantastic!

Check out the Great Eastern Trail - parallels the AT, using the Benton Mackay, the Allegheny Trail, Tuscarora, Link Trail, Midstate Trail, Finger Lakes, etc.

The Midstate goes from the MD border (where it connects to the Greenridge Trail which leads to the C&O, which leads to the Tuscarora) to the NY border.

I’ll second Ginny on the Mid-State Trail for PA. It’s mostly complete now and an interesting difference to the AT through PA. Here’s the homepage of the Mid-State Trail Association to get you the basic info.

It is, as Ginny says, part of the new GET. Try taking a look at Hammock Hanger’s journal from this year on her attempted GET hike. It definitely included both the Pinhoti and the Benton Mackay, so it sounds like what you’re after.
