Don't worry about starting the trail by yourself. If you start in the spring there will be many other hikers starting out, all a little apprehensive. In no time you will team up with others. My first day on the trail in March 2005. There were at least 35 people at Hawk Mtn. Shelter. A group of 5 to 7 is unweildy and could never stay together. Good luck, just do it!

I agree, in 2000, on march one, there had to be 40 people at springer. I fell in with a loose group of about eight hikers, we camped same place every night and generally supported each other. I never saw any of them again ( on trail) after erwin tn. It was to many people to make a decision, like going to town or not, zero days. Not everyone has the same budget some can afford hotels while others hostels and others dumpsters(lol). Hike your hike and you'll be fine.
