I recently moved to Long Island and I'm hoping someone in the general area can recommend a good weekend section for me. I would really love to find something where I could potentially leave Long Island after work on a Friday and head straight there.

So here is my dream trip in a perfect world:
-About and hour outside of NYC
-Shelter or established site close to access point since I’ll be arriving late. I use a tarp so I always love sites with big ol trees

-Nice peak with a pretty view somewhere in there or even a close drive to hit on the way back.

Other trails besides the AT would be great too!

I seriously appreciate any help in getting off this godforsaken Island!

On a Friday after work Take Metro-North train from Grand Central to Pawling NY. 1 1/2 hrs. Walk or hitch North 3 miles up NY 22 to the trail. Hike South(left) 3 miles to the Telephone Pioneer Shelter. This is at milemarker 1441.7. Next day hike South it's about 36 miles, 18 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday to US9/ny 403,(milemarker 1405.5, hitchhike left to Peekskill NY and take the Metro North back to NY.

Good hiking conditions up on the ridge along the Appalachian Trail Both North and South of town. You should have good weather also.

Sorry, just learning to use this machine...ment to say Pawling. If Fridays rain does not make too much mud it should be great hiking Saturday and Sunday
