Losing Weight - Appalachian Trail

I am leaving on a 3-4 week hike on the Appalachian Trail soon. I'm 5'9" 250 pounds, fairly out of shape. How much weight can I expect to lose in a month on trail, if I maintain a 12-14 mile per day average?

A lot. I'd wager you'll drop at least 30 pounds.

Doing 12-14 miles/day as overwt. as you are in the heat of summer may do more than cause wt. loss. It may kill you. Take it slower. You’ll lose just as much wt. and you’ll enjoy the experience.

Losing 25 lbs. or so will be easy. The real trick is somehow keeping it off after you stop backpacking every day. Your metabolism will be screaming out for constant exercise, and will store fat so that it won't be tricked again. Backpacking sucks as a real weight loss method, unless you never stop walking.

If you manage to stick to 12-14 miles a day you'll lose a lot. Eat your carbs in the morning and early afternoon and protein for late afternoon snacks and dinner (think nuts like almonds etc, powdered eggs, protein bars and beef jerky); you'll lose more that way. But markv, is right in that backpacking trips aren't the best weight loss methods. Best of luck to you but I think you'll most likely be miserable...might be best to get the ball rolling now and get some of that weight off prior.
