*Low Water at Rice Field*

Spring at Rice Field shelter is .3 miles down a really steep hill. You loose something like 200 vertical feet just getting down there. The spring, if it can be called that, was nothing more than a trickle of water.

If going NOBO out of Pearisburg, there is a spring with good flow 2.5 miles before the shelter. If going SOBO, there is a spring with good flow at 1.6 miles before the shelter.

Do not use Rice Field spring unless you are completely out of water. Lots of silt; clogged up my filter. Had to use tablets to clean the water.

yep… at a mile and a half north of the shelter is a place paw and i have enjoyed…(if i remember correctly)…nobos can hike a bit further from rice field to this water source, which, (am i correct?) is on the ‘east’ side of the trail?..maybe not…but i DO remember that there were some good flat woods for camping in there…do try to get water BEFORE (or after) symm’s meadow, though, because, again, as i’m remembering, the water is sort of a cow/frog pond there (though i recall it being a beautiful campsite under the apple trees…with views!)…i may need to be set straight on some of these logistics as it’s been a while since we were up there…
