this article was in my local paper last week - i’m always glad to see the trail get its props! been thru the notch, and think the descriptions of the next-to-last mile on a nobo thru sound much more difficult.

reporters can’t get facts straights. The only 4K footer is Old Speck in the Mahoosucs. It’s a rugged range no doubt, but article ain’t totally accurate by saying it’s comprised of 4K footers one after another. I was actually at the base of Old Speck yesterday afternoon in Grafton Notch, Lonesome Dove and I hiked the new Grafton Loop Trail (GLT), we ran into a posse of 5 nobos hitching into Bethel. They were pleased when I didn’t open with “you’re not going to make it”. So if anyone sees them in the next few weeks going through Maine, be positive and assure them it is still possible to finish post 10/15. Us late finishers appreciate that. We’ve had gorgeous weather this fall, we did have a cool night this Tuesday, but the days are spectacular.

My wife and my in-laws brought the recent USA article about the notch to my attention.

I had a good time through the notch myself.

I am pretty rare. I climbed over the rocks and never took off my pack. Guess I wanted to be different from the rest.

Paid for it though. By the time I good to the shelter that night, my arms were killing me, I had leg cramps. And worst yet, I did a mile an hour that day. After having done 20 milers without a second thought, this section of trail taught me that I was not as good as I thought.

Ah, Maine, the way life should be – not filled with conceit – but with a healthy respect for the skill it takes to do the difficult.

Glad to see that the did this article.

Maybe that is why I spent four or five days at The Cabin.

BTW, some the friends I followed in '98 did finish the trail by keeping an eye on the weather. Others did were too into themselves and the sadness of finishing their hike to see that they were going to miss the Big K if they did not do something to move forward.

Hope the hikers Bluebearee saw get their move on and jump forward to safely do the Big K and then do the section they jumped to finish it out. It is dificult to get back there and finish it if you are not from the area.
