Mail Drop Addresses

I’ve ordered both the thru hikers companion and the thru hikers data book and I’m wondering if these will have enough information for me to figure out addresses for maildrops (I only plan 6-7).

Thanks

The Companion lists all the Post Offices and all the other palces that accept mail drops. You might want to check Whiteblaze.net for Baltimore Jack’s maildrop list.

Flame and I looked at journals of hikers our age and made a list of the maildrop sites they used. We also read their comments about the towns and how much trouble some places were to hitch into. We chose 4 couples our age and then compared the list. It didn’t take but about an hour to develop our list. We then called each site that was not a Post Office to verify they still took drops and if there were any special request (Mt. Mamas said the box could not weigh over 10 lbs). Several hikers from 02 have their maildrop list on Trailjournals. Check it out. It appeared to us that the older couples had more maildrops and were better organized than the younger hikers. Most of the hikers in their 20’s had very few drops. I hope this helps. Happy Trails

We started our list based on when we’d need the next set of maps. We’ll see how it works. 9 drops total, 3 of them with 3 - 4 days of food.

You might want to check out this address:

I think you’ll be surprised at how many places there are along the trail to buy food; unless you’re on a specialized or restricted diet (vegan, kosher, no-salt, etc.) or unless you’re planning to prepare/de-hydrate all your meals in advance, there are actually very few places where you NEED
to send yourself food.

The Companion gives excellent advice on where these stores and markets can be found.

I appreciate the replies.

Jack, that link isn’t working for me although I was able to access the info by cutting the /baltimorejackarticle/html of the end.

Sorry if that link is giving you problems; I thought I'd typed the correct address. The information is also permanently posted in the "Articles" section at www.whiteblaze.net; there is other useful maildrop information there as well if you look thru the "Forums" archives. <!--198115163219_031503-->
