Mail Drop Question

What happens to mail drops if you don’t pick them up ?

I assume they the Post Office returns them after a certain time has gone by.

You are correct. They will hold it for up to 30 days. Sometimes longer if you have an ETA on it or the post offices along the trail will wait until the “big” hiker season is over. Then it goes back to sender.

I’ve been told by more than one post office that I had to call and request them to return my unretrieved box (despite the presence of a return address). So you might want to be safe rather than sorry and call to follow up with the local postal carrier rather than leaving the matter entirely in their hands.

In my experience, most PO’s along the trail will hold the box for the season, despite the ETA. PO staff know how hikers can get “off-track” due to fun, injury, weddings, and/or other unexpected delays.
