Ive been toying witht he idea of GA-ME '06. I have been thinking as of lately that I dont want to have to bother with mail drops. Is it possible to hike the AT without having any maildrops ready for you? Does anyone know someone that has tried??

it is VERY easy to do so on the AT. i know, because i’ve done it. with the exception of one maildrop (at fontana dam)which was for special circumstances, i hiked the whole trail without them. All you need is a good guidebook to tell you the distances between towns and how good of a re-supply they have. Wingfoot is a good one. i’ve seen many many people do this.

I cant proove it but I think mail drops cost more than easily buying food as you go. Between the postage and the waste. No one wants to eat all the stuff they plan to. Also everyone seems to underestimat ethe amount of meals they have off trail. And waiting for the PO to open is a real pain. If you do maildrops mail to hostels and stores never the PO.
