hello,

A very dear friend of mine has just begin her south-to-north AT adventure. I am not a hiker, but I am a huge fan and believer in the power of snail mail, and fully intend to keep her mail drops populated. I am looking for ideas for little things I can include in care packages for her along her journey. Please feel free to e-mail me privately with your suggestions.

thanks so much

I don’t really have a clue of the sorts of things that, say, you might crave on the trail but can’t bother with or don’t want to carry. So, tell me a thing that, if you found it in a package at your mail drop, would make you weep tears of joy and bring you instant pleasure! (G-rated replies only, please )

Some great things to get in a care package:

  1. a pre-paid calling card
  2. a gift certificate to a restaurant or grocery store
    • buy this over the phone or by mail ahead of time--try AYCE restaurants!
    • make sure to do this only in towns where you're sure the hiker will stop
  3. homemade cookies/brownies
  4. a local (as in Michigan) newspaper
  5. a replacement for a small gear piece
    • a pocketknife
    • a bandanna or two
    • an LED flashlight
  6. a fun, disposable game (deck of cards, etc.)

Greetings,

Aside from food items, I must say that humorous post cards were a huge delight for me while at Officer Training School (I am retired AF). My former supervisor sent me postcards from Alaska with humorous photos/captions that always, absolutely always brought a smile to my face, since I spent 3 years in Alaska. Anything personal or hometownish would be wonderful.

john - hope to hike the AT someday with my daughter
