Mail drops - The Colorado Trail

Do I need to prepare my mail drops ahead of time or can I do all of this in resupply towns. Kinda like leapfrog with my mail. Is this possible ?

Depends. Are you likely to hike from town to town faster than the carrier can pick up and deliver?

Note that there is no longer a post office at Twin Lakes. You have to send things via UPS to yourself c/o the General Store. They will hold the package for you.

Note that Creede is a very small town. The outfitter there strongly recommends that you send yourself a resupply box there rather than depend on resupplying there.

Full resupply is possible locally at Breckenridge and Salida. Don’t know about Silverton.

I would suggest doing it ahead of time. If you are in town, the last thing you are going to want to do is mess with food packaging, ziplock bags and whatnot. More than likely you will want to sleep and enjoy. Preparation is more enjoyable in the comfort of your own home, that way when you are actually there, you can enjoy being there rather than sitting at a picnic table in a park, battling the wind and magpies, and chipmunks and squirrells, etc…

Thanks guys, I decided to send my drop boxes to Frisco (Post Office), Leadville (Hostel), Salida (Hostel), Purchase in Lake City, and Molas Lake (sent to campground via UPS).
