Well, if you haven’t seen B-Jack’s resupply suggestions on White Blaze, then you should.

That being said, resupply is usually a long way off the trail in NH and Maine. Let’s start with the easy ones, and then fill in some options from there.

Gorham: I think that everyone goes into Gorham. There is a good Shaw’s supermarket on the road to Berlin and an outfitter. So, no need for a mail drop here.

Monson. Everyone goes into Monson before starting the 100 miles. There is a general store, or catch a ride with the Shaws into Greenville for resupply. The general store has the basic hiker food like Liptons and such. If you want anything special, better do a mail drop.

Between Glencliff and Gorham, most people resupply at least once. Mail drop at Mt Washington is discouraged. You can mail drop at AMC Pinkham Notch. Many people hitch into North Woodstock, usually from Franconia Notch. Supermarket is in nearby Lincoln, or do a mail drop. At Crawford Notch, many hitch to the campground store.

In Maine, some go into Andover for a maildrop. Others go on and hitch into Rangely (supermarket). If you don’t resupply in Rangely, then you will probably want tohitch in for a maildrop in Stratton. IF you don’t resupply in Stratton, then you will want to do a mail drop in Caratunk.

Except for Caratunk, Glencliff, and possibly Monson, everything in Maine and New Hampshire will be a hitch into town.

On my hike my drops from Glencliff north were Glencliff, Gorham, Stratton and Monson. Having said that I ran across Peg Leg and ended up in Andover. Great fraps or milkshakes in Andover. I had three I think of the two scoop ones while there. I also hitched into Rangeley mainly for a day off. I took more days off toward the end not wanting the hike to end. In the Whites most huts will have bread and soup either free or for a small fee. I tried eating whenever I could during the stretch to the end. Paid the most for a Snickers on the trail at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. In the 100 miles there is White House Landing. I didn’t send anything there but went for the experience I guess. It is not cheap there though. It was part of my slowing at the end.

in andover wont the guest house or the cabin drive you to resupply?

if you dont mind short “easy” hitching then i would just go with maildrops to glencliff and monson. you will be able to figure the rest when you get there.

in fact, i suggest maybe not worrying about that until hanover, NH, where you can go to that great big co-op, buy some food, throw it in two boxes, and mozy to the PO. by then you will have a much better idea of what you will want.

Milo,

The problem with mailing yourself a drop from Hanover is that you might be in Glencliff before the package gets there. Glencliff is only 43 miles north of Hanover.

If you wanted to mail yourself a package in Glencliff, better done from Manchester Center.

I dropped @ Glencliff and then Rangeley. I also had the benefit of on trail r/s by the Hiking Subaru. Depending what you’re doing maildrops for (which really is the primary question here) there really is no need at most of those places except maybe Monson (unless you do get a ride into Dover assuming Shaws will be run per norm next year in the wake of Keith Sr’s passing). SuperShaw’s supermarket in Gorham, two mediocre variety stores in Andover, big new market outside town in Rangeley (not in town anymore, but towards the trail a bit), decent market in Stratton which can get you through to Monson.

The man at whitehouse landing in the 100 mile wild. is not a friendly man. He disrespects hikers (calling us dirty, stinky hikers) and is obviously in it just for the money. He will nickel and dime you throughout your experience. I understand that he has to charge more due to distance to town, but come on. When it was time to leave he was rushing our entire party, and yelling at us to get in the boat. Not to mention when we arrived and blew the horn, he picked us up at his convienience since the N.E. Patriots were playing (he wouldn’t let us watch). I think people have stolen his horn because he is an ass, not because he was spoiling the 100 mile experience.:evil
