Maine day hike - Appalachian Trail

Hey, if you were going to take your girlfriend (or boyfriend) on a hike for their first time in the Maine mountains, probably a 5 hour hike or so, where would you take them? My mind keeps wandering towards Old speck Mtn or Mahoosuc notch. Any ideas? Thanks!

Uh no, first hike in Maine?? or first hike ever? What is their conditioning? Does it have to be on the AT? Lots of good mountains not on the trail (I know, hard to believe).

I spent the summer working @ Camden Hills, lots of great views here, on the coast, but nice mountains. Or Acadia.

So you’re still here in Maine eh??

Yeah, we've been to Camden, its only 1/2 hour from where i live. Doesn't have to be on the A.T but I want to show her some good old fashioned Maine mountain ruggedness. She's in great shape, i'm in pretty good shape (both farmers). I thought of you the other day while browsing wool pendletons in LLBean. You ever notice how you can't go into Patagonia without wanting something, or as is the case with me, buying something? Glad you're still on the forums. Ross

alright then, so go do Old Speck! I came down the Eyebrow Trail last week, so incorporate that into your hike and your friend will know what hiking in Maine is like. Remember farming, running, aerobics, none of that is like hiking, so don't be surprised if it's still difficult.

You'd be surprised what farming does for the endurance side of stuff. Anyways, thanks, i'll look into the eyebrow trail, never heard of it. I know there's a 2 or 3 mile spur that runs from a logging road to the summit, it'd be nice to come back down another way.

									Hey Ross,

If there are any blueberries left in Maine, I’d hike there.
Might be up to do the Long Trail next fall.

Hey Bluebearee…

No berries left on the mountains...

there isn’t a logging road that goes to the top of Old Speck, you might be thinking of Success Pond Rd that runs parallel to the Mahoosuc Range from Berlin NH to the head of Grafton Notch (north of the AT xing). You said 5 hour hike. That’s an out and back to Old Speck from 26. To use Success Pond Rd, the most northern trailhead off that runs to Speck Pond trail, but you’re not going to be able to make a loop up and down Old Speck. Sorry, not easy to explain, get a map, do you have the Maine AMC guidebook? that’s what you need…

Blighe me!!!! You shouldn't have to ask where to hike Maine. How are you, anyway. I would do Gulf Hagas if it were me. A bit of a drive but good.

Take the northern fork on the way up, the southern fork on the way down on the Wright Trail to Goose Eye Mt. Nice view interesting loop option. Near Sunday River.

Check nice hikes on the Maine side of Evan Notch, NH Rt.113 of of Rte 2.
eg. Speckled Mt.
