Maine Hike - Appalachian Trail

I am wondering how long I should plain a trip for to hike the first/last section of the AT in Maine. I am wanting to start from the beginning and section hike all the way through. I know that there are three sections in Maine and that the first (eastern) section is “the Hundred Miles” between Katahdin and Monson. Could anyone get me an estimated number of days? We are relatively experienced hikers and in decent shape.

Thanks before hand,

Emily

They advice to carry 10 days of food to do the 100 Mile Wilderness. I did it completely out of shape in 8 days and met a hiker who did it in four. A lot of hikers will do it in 6 - 8 days but it will depend on your condition and the condition of the trail. Stay away from it in June because of blackflies! I’m from Maine and know them well. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Many hikers get through the Wilderness in fewer than 10 days. I’m a low-milage hiker, and I could have gotten through in 7 (although I relaxed and took 10). I wouldn’t take less than 10 day’s worth because you never know what might happen. For example - the rivers. If you’re hiking in Spring, a day of rain could make a river impassable for a day or more. Hermit Crab, also from Maine

Listen to the guys above for sure, especially about the blackflies. Im glad I missed them on my northbound thruhike. In thruhiker shape, it took me 6 days to get from Monson to Katahdin Stream Campground. I zero’ed in the wilderness, so it was only 5 hiking days. Without thruhiker legs, I wouldnt carry anything less than 8 days of food and hike northbound so that if you ran low on food you could get by with a meal at White House Landing or Abol Bridge…

There’s also Harrison Camps just before the Kennebec. It may be breakfast only…can’t remember. I know as of 8/06 Tim (the owner) said he may be closing. I hope he didn’t. His 12 pancake breakfast was to die for!
