TJ aka Teej or any one who could help me find a good spot for trail magic in the last 300 miles of the trail.
I’m looking for a place like we had in VA, logging road, etc. Basically not near a road or where hikers wouldn’t expect to find a good meal and lots of great junk to eat and drink. Thanks…POPPIE

There is a rough road that crosses the AT between Sugarloaf and the Crockers. Its about a trail mile before the crocker campsite has a nice parking spot and if you are ambitious hike SOBO a few hundred yards and there is a great campsite next to the river where you could set up. I did magic there last year for a day. You will need a vehicle with some clearance though.

Another place that would be cool is Mahoosuc Notch. There is a looooong logging road that leads from just outside of Bethel, fairly close to Grafton Notch rec area. I believe it’s about 12 miles down the logging road. It’s 2 miles hike up a very slight incline following a beautiful creek. It spits you out right at the begining of the notch. I’ve been through there a few times. I rekon it would be an ideal spot for some magic, thruhikers would never expect it. You can get more info and exact location by purchasing the Maine Gazeteer, it’s pretty detailed. If you go with this option please email me and i’ll email back exact directions.

Have fun!

Cheers

P.S Don’t forget your bug baffler.

(Slightly revised)

  1. Rte 2 E. of Gorham, NH where AT comes down off Rattle River. Good parking, plenty of tired hungry NOBO’s, great place to offer rides into town. Not exactly out of the way but a great spot when we tried it.

  2. Long Falls Dam Rd or E. Bog Rd coming off Bigelow Range. Easily reached via N. New Portland. Celebrate the 2000 mi. mark with NOBO’s.

Shouldn’t be many bugs in August.

Hope you try it!

Big Wilson lean-to

Just n-bound of the lean-to, about one mile north, there is a ROUGH road, best to approach from the KI Road on the Greenville end.

Moxie Bald Lean-to, southbound of Moxie Bald, there is a road that comes within fifty yards (or nearly so) of the lean-to.
