After 10 years of hiking the south half of the AT, Doc and I are heading north while our knees are young (relatively). This year we are planning a three week section in Maine heading south from Katadhin. It looks like we should get into New Hampshire - anyone have suggestions on how to get back to Bangor, ME from the Gorham, NH area?

The Maine AT is to be savored. Three weeks to do 300 miles is pushing it. There are some awful tough sections in Maine. Is it realistic for you to average 15 miles a day over the toughest 300 miles of the entire AT. We took 36 days from Gorham to Mt. K. Loved it.

Hi Rocky and thanks for the comment - We have three weeks this year and hope to get as far as we can - If we don't get all the way through Maine, I suspect that the AT will still be there next year (and the following). We've found that we average in the 15 mile range most years, sometimes more, sometimes less. We aren't rushing, but we are pushing a little bit. One of the issues (I refuse to say problems) with long-term Sectioning is that we are aging as we work our way up the trail - I was in my early 40's when we started and I turn 55 this year - I am hoping to finish before I retire (so that I can then hike the whole thing in one shot). Gorham is a goal - we have to estimate where we may get off this year so we can work out logistics (All my contacts and friends that I have counted on for shuttles live south of the mason-dixon line). Because we are so far from home (Georgia) planning really makes a difference to use our time effectively - I don't want to spend any more time than I have to off the trail (except for the occasional shower and hot meal). Hope to see you on the trail!

Depending on when you are planning on finishing I could provide a shuttle. You may want to consider flying out of Manchester NH or Portland Maine on your return. Both are much closer to Gorham then Bangor. The bus that leaves Gorham also runs directly to Logan Airport in Boston where you can catch a flight to where ever you are going.

I would like to do a day hike up Katahdin this Summer. I will hike 20 miles in TN/NC end of June. I need to hike beginning of July or Aug or Sept. Is there a better time? I know the mountain can get hot or cold or stormy or be just right. All thoughts welcome. rufnready

Hi Chris -- Thanks for the offer - it may be a few years until we get down to PA as we are now trying a SOBO for the second ten year section of our 20-year plan. However, if the stars align, you may get an email, phone call, or mind meld (that being the likely replacement for email in the future) asking for a pickup - I am really hoping that we have flying cars by the time we finish.
PS - what’s your son’s trailname? We may get lucky and run into him.
:cheers
