Maine Trail Conditions?

Looking to get up into Maine for a section hike starting around May 23. I know it’ll be muddy and there are going to be black flies, but how much snow is still on the trail in Maine? Especially in the Mahoosucs?

I can’t find any trail reports for AT in Maine from the last week but for the Mahoosucs its reasonably accurate to use info from hikes in the NH Whites. I’d go to www.viewsfromthetop.com and browse the Northeast Trail Conditions section. Right now it seems the snow line is between 3000 and 3500 feet with summit cols and areas around ponds holding extra snow. Blow downs should also be expected. The AMC should patrol the Mahoosuc Trail sometime in the next few weeks and remove blow downs. I’d expect the Mahoosucs to be extra challenging for the next few weeks.

I just hiked from Gorham to grafton notch through mahoosucs. Above 3000’ still quite a bit of snow (expect to do some postholing in the afternoon). Brought crampons and used them only on descent from old speck mtn (could have managed without them though). Still quite a bit of ice but mostly avoidable. LOTS of blowdowns, especially south of the mahoosuc notch but north as well. No black flies for me though, but they will be out soon I’m sure. With the snow and blowdowns, we were barely able to maintain more than 1 mile/hour so plan accordingly. Great section. Have fun!
