Hi all. I was wondering what your opinions were on map strategies for the PCT. Is it standard to just use the little maps from the guidebooks?

What i used…Data book, followed by the topos from the guide books. I’d only use the sections i needed then mailed them ahead.
The trail is soo defined you could get away without a guide, just use the data book, Andy.

The maps in the guidebook are all you need. Do get the data book though as it makes it easier to see at a glance how far it is between water sources. Ignore the topographic information though as it is very deceptive.

Guidebook maps and data book and you are set. I would travel sections on the AT w/o maps, but not the PCT, as there are places like horse trail intersections and motorbike roads where you can get off on a side trail for awhile if not paying attention. Also, there are TONS of fun side trips in close proximity to the PCT, so for areas of outstanding surroundings (ie the Sierra, Mt. Shasta, Lassen National Park, etc.) consider getting a detailed map with side trails and doing a little extra exploring. Happy trails!
