Are maps of the AT readily available in the towns along the trail or does one have to purchase in advance and post?

Most outfitters will have the maps but you go from one map set to another in some inopportune places like Fontana Dam where in 2000 there was no place to purchase any. It may take a little planning but can be done. For example you could purchase the smokies map at the NOC and mail it forward to yourself at Fontana Dam.
