Maps from the Winnett book

Hi everyone,

I’ve been told by friends who’ve hiked the JMT that the topo maps in the Winnett book from Wilderness Press are enough to do the trail, as it’s relatively well-marked. However, reviews of the book online said the opposite. I had been planning on getting the Tom Harrison map set but now I’m not sure. What do you all think? Will I make it through (and find Kesearge Pass out to Indepence for my last food drop) with just the book, especially considering all the snow? that seems simpler than all those maps.

Thanks.

You’ll do fine even without a map. The trail is well marked and well travelled. If you have any hesitation as to where the trail goes, sit down for a snack break and someone will most likely come walking down the trail within the hour. That being said, I would never recommend that anyone travel in the backcountry without map and a compass.
The Tom Harrison map set is beautiful, very readable and printed in color on sturdy light weight paper. You walk through one map every day or two depending on your pace. I used the maps mostly to identify names of peaks and lakes that I passed and to anticipate what was ahead along the trail. The book I read before hand and left at home.
