Eric the Black’s guides are not worth the money. The PCT databook is $10 for the entire trail. Even the guidebooks, with all the text and photos, are only $70 for the whole trail, a fraction of the price of Erik the Black’s guides which aren’t as good as the guidebook and the databook together. Not to mention issues with map scale and datapoint accuracy.

A better alternative is the half-mile PCT maps (free) with the databook. Or possibly the Postholer PCT maps (postholer.com) with the PCT databook, or even the postholer databook for free! Save yourself $100 and get other data sources.

I agree. Download the ‘PCT water report’ as you start your hike. Toss in an iPhone with the GPS application and then download halfmile’s waypoints. This is what I would do should I ever do the PCT again.

Good hiking!
