The other day someone made a comment about all the people starting on March 1st. Is this people people starting from Springer or from the approach trail. I’m starting the approach trail on the 1st. Maybe everyone that is starting the approach trail on Mar, 1st should get together and have a big breakfast at the lodge before the start of a couple days of oatmeal.

I am planning to start April 12th and when I read about you, brave people, who are going to start March 1st, all I have to say (as the French say ) “Chapeau”.
How cold do you expect it to be? a few words on gear please…

I am starting March 1st at Springer Mtn. I USED to (read again, USED TO) live in Michigan and wore shorts and T-Shirts year round, even on 5 degree winter days. Now, after having lived in the Mojave Desert for 3 1/2 years, I have the feeling I am going to freeze my arse off for the first few weeks, between layering for warmth and sweating under it all during exertion, mixed with permanent bugger-cicles frozen to my nose.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m gonna start on March 1st from the State Park and spend the first week hiking the blue trail to Springer. I figure that ought to be a pretty gradual “break-in” period. At 8.6 miles to Springer, three days to hike, four “zero” days, and a 1/4 a mile per hour pace - should arrive on time.

Wish me luck!
