There are several groups that hike regularly in Northern NJ and you can access information via HARRIMANHIKES@YAHOO.COM if you wish to hike on a regular basis. Sometimes they do overnights in other regions such as the Catskill Mountains, the Adirondack Mountains or elsewhere. Some of the hiking is done on weekends and some is done on weekdays. The Friday group does dayhikes at levels beyond “beginner level” and this is based upon length, altitude, condition of trail (path vs bushwack) and so on. The size of the groups that hike Harriman is between 4 and 12 and this is dtermined by weather reports and atmospheric condition (individuals choose when they want to hike).
Also the AMC (Appalachian Money Club) has organized hikes for people craving companionship or who just like to hike with very large groups. I know some who are members of this group who use the schedule of hiking so that they can avoid trails where the AMC will be hiking as they choose to hike solo or with a few rather than get caught up in a crowd.
There are lots of opportunities to hike in Northern NJ as you must know if you live in that area. Best wishes on your decision to begin your trek in 2005.
