I am planning on doing a thru-hike North sometime in early March. I live up in NJ, and was really just wondering if there was anyone around here who is planning on doing the same, and if so,whether they wanted to hook up and maybe do some pre-lim trips or just generally talk about planning and execustion. Let me know…

I am sure you will get many responses. I would definitely join a few hiking online groups to put your word out, and also attend the PA Ruck in January 2005 at Pine Grove Furnace on the AT. There you will meet other 2005 thru-hikers and many previous ones who will fill your mind and heart with knowledge and dreams. Good luck.

There are several groups that hike regularly in Northern NJ and you can access information via HARRIMANHIKES@YAHOO.COM if you wish to hike on a regular basis. Sometimes they do overnights in other regions such as the Catskill Mountains, the Adirondack Mountains or elsewhere. Some of the hiking is done on weekends and some is done on weekdays. The Friday group does dayhikes at levels beyond “beginner level” and this is based upon length, altitude, condition of trail (path vs bushwack) and so on. The size of the groups that hike Harriman is between 4 and 12 and this is dtermined by weather reports and atmospheric condition (individuals choose when they want to hike).

Also the AMC (Appalachian Money Club) has organized hikes for people craving companionship or who just like to hike with very large groups. I know some who are members of this group who use the schedule of hiking so that they can avoid trails where the AMC will be hiking as they choose to hike solo or with a few rather than get caught up in a crowd.

There are lots of opportunities to hike in Northern NJ as you must know if you live in that area. Best wishes on your decision to begin your trek in 2005.

Rob,
Great to hear that you’re planning ahead. Me and my partner (no trail name yet) are planning on leaving Springer Mt. on March 1, 2005. Look forward to seeing you on the trail.

~ Def enjoy your planning and preparation for your hike. “solace”(my 2004 companion) & I found a great deal of excitement and satisfaction in the mere act of just packing. Yes indeed, good advice from other hikers. Many outing clubs still offer excursions and hikes in the cold ass months of Jan, Feb & March in New England. Wish you a great hike in 2005. I got to the smokies before injuries forced me off. Im about 70% in favor of trying again, so maybe see you out there. ~ “KTR”
