I am planning to begin hiking the AT on March 1st and am not sure what to do about footwear. Should I stick with my trail running shoes or do I need something warmer? Should I bring crampons?
Advice?
Thanks!

I left in February in trail runners and wore them the entire AT. I went throught 4 pair by the end. Yes, they do get wet, especially walking through snow, but it was worth it because they were dry in half the time of my companion’s boots. I had lots of ice going over the smokies but definitely not worth the effort of taking crampons on/off for such short stretches. Plus, they can be dangerous if you fall. Gaitors rock though-I used them the whole way.
