McAfee Knob Parking

I’ve hiked most all of the AT south of Pearisburg in Va. and would like some info on the central and northern parts. This June I’d like to start near Roanoke and McAfee Knob. One of the books I have mentions a 10-12 car parking area near Va. 311…anyone know the safety of this parking lot?..vandalism is always a concern and I probably wouldn’t leave it more than a few days…plan to backtrack and drive further north.

Doc,

I’ve never heard of a problem at that parking lot. But, like anywhere, it could always happen. Always lock up and keep your valuables out of view.

This lot is right beside a busy highway and gets a lot of use.

I’d have to say I wouldn’t park there overnight. During the day that 12 car parking lot turns into about a 40 car parking lot. It is usually bustling. Overnight, in plain view of a heavily used highway…I’d be wary. There are a few hostels abd B&B’s around there that may be better for you. Wingfoot writes about the Crossotown B&B (I think that’s the name) In addition there is a newer hostel on the first road crossing N. of Dragon’s Tooth. I think 2.5 miles from the tooth. I remember walking by the sign last summer. It’s called The Pines. Hope this helps Grimace

Gee, south of Dragon’s Tooth there were a couple of quiet road crossings.

In Troutville or Daleville there was an Econolodge right near the trail (Shoney’s ayce buffet down the street) that seemed to help hikers.

You might check the Homeplace Restaurant. They have great food, a big parking lot, and they’re right down the road.

Thanks for the info.

It looks like there are plenty of options. I’ll probably try to park somewhere in Catawba…it looks to be only about a mile from the trail.

See ya out there…Doc.

Does anyone happen to have directions to four pines (the pines?) hostel? I’m meeting some thru hiking friends there and wanted to zero in on it’s location. Or perhaps a suggestion where to find this info? ~Jackie
