McAfee's Knob - Appalachian Trail

I’m trying to figure out a way to get to McAfee’s Knob on the 4th of July. If I started hiking on that Sunday, July 1st and finished hiking on the next Saturday, July 8th and arrive on the knob on that Wednesday, where is a good place to start and finish if I averaged around 10-15 mile days. I know I can get a Wingfoot book and calculate it myself and I will, but I figured I’m bored at work and I’d hear what you all have to say. Any suggestions on a good place to start and finish?

VA #42 is a great place to start - the biggest tree on the Trail, the “kefer Oak” is just north of the road & Sarver Cabin (if you’re starting Sunday afternoon) is a great newer shelter with a good view & some intersting nearby ruins of Sarver’s Homestead, despite the STEEP blue blaze down. (VA42 is around 45 miles south of the knob)

If you’re getting picked up @ the finish, you could be flexible and finish on any of the numerous trail crossings of the BRP. (Blue Ridge Parkway)

I was on McAfee’s Knob last 4th of the July and can attest to the great fireworks display(s) from many angles! One of the highlights of the whole trail. happy trails!
