Medical Advice - Pacific Crest Trail

My dad is currently in the Sierras, and one of his two companions has a pretty bad ingrown toenail I guess. This is from his last entry on Trail Journals:

“Well, Dave is still limping. He insists his toe will not be a problem. Hmmm, I don’t know. There is an extensive area of red puffiness all around the side of his toe and around the top of the nail almost to the joint and it is draining pus from a spot on the side of the nail. I honestly don’t know whether to accept Dave’s opinion. We’ll still be here until tomorrow morning if anyone has some advice. I can be reached at dkosk@pocketmail.com.”

If anyone is reading this tonight or in the morning maybe you can give him some advice…

Thanks!

Matt

If Superdave presented with these symptoms to the clinic I work at, he would be placed on antibiotics and probably a partial resection of the nail. sorry for the bad news - a visit to the doctor might be necessary. I worry about the redness extending up the toe, may be a cellulitis from the infection. Would be better treated early rather than later due to a prolonged recovery time.
