Meeting a ride at Baxter, or not

Guys, over on the “other” forum I read a thread that linked me to the county record for Baxter and an issue of hiker abuse of closed ascent trails and the weather. People going up the K and being hauled down when it was closed. The mention of this added that entrance to the park was limited by quota which I think it is, and making reservations WELL in advance of when you plan to be there. Duh, if I’m thru hiking and my brothe-in-law is picking us up and wants to summit how the fiddlyfart can I tell him when I will be there in advance. I’ve heard that you line up at the gate at 6am and if the park is full, tough crap. I don’t know the layout of the area and how far Daicy is from Baxter etc, anyone who has done this have a plan for me? I have Baxter’s # but they aren’t open until January and the message say to “make reservations now or you won’t get in in the summer”. ???

I finished in a group of 8 people. We had two sets of parents meet us to take us back to Millinocket. For what they told us; they were past their quota for the day, but when the parents said, “I’m here to pick up a thru-hiker” they let them in anyhow; no questions. This was on August 29, still peak season. I don’t even think that they charged them the entrace fee. But hey, that entrance guard may have been fired by now. Don’t worry about it. If for some reason, your ride can’t make it into the park, someone will pick you up in the parking lot and take you to millinocket.

My bro-in-law HAS to be there. It just wouldn’t be a Simms thing. Should he be at Baxter gate very early to ensure getting in and how about us? Since we’re thru hikers and self sufficiant, are we allowed in reguardless of quota or is that a tourist this? Hikers are allowed in reguardless and we get a shelter? Can you give the last days details of your hike? Thanks, Jon

Thru-hikers are not counted in the day’s quota. That only applies to people who drive in. There are 10? spots reserved for thruhikers at Daicy Pond Campsite (which is 7 miles from Baxter Peak). Katahdin Stream Campground (which is two miles closer) does not reserve any sites for thruhikers, but you’re welcome to radio over and see if they have any spots left. If they do, they’ll hold one for you. Assuming that you’ll finish before labor day, you probably won’t get a spot at Katahdin Stream. I stayed at Daicy Pond, a contently so, it’s a beautiful area, not nearly as crowded as Katahdin Stream. The two miles from Daicy to Katahdin Stream are insignificant, easy miles, let that not scare you. We left Daicy Pond before 5:30AM and headed up the Mountain. The rush of adrenaline will power you up the mountain. I can’t imagine the park turning away hikers a Daicy Pond. I think that there were definately more hikers there than spots reserved, but as long as you respect them, they’re cool about it. Just get an early start and don’t worry about it. As for your relative/friend picking you up. I opted to catch a ride with my friends. They had two sets of parents coming, which carried our 8 person group out of the park. Even though the park was at its quota for the day, the gate attendant let them in after being informed they were there to pick up thru-hikers. Baxter really takes leaps and bounds to help out thru-hikers. Your person will most likely get through alright. If for some unforseen disaster, and your person is not able to get a ride in; there are always plenty of people ar either the Katahdin Stream (other thruhikers parents) or at the Knife’s edge exit. I went down the Knife’s edge. It’s not exactly the easiest thing to do with a pack. All of us mighty thruhikers were quite spent after coming down that thing. Whoooohooooo!
