A few months ago I read a post here that said that women do better than men in completing their thru-hikes, I thought that was interesting. A recent article in the journal Biology Letters looked at all the attempted ascents of Everest since 1990. All-in-all there’s a 30% success rate (and a 1.5% fatality rate), where women and men have the same percentage. Age makes a big difference though, only 13% of those over 40 succeed (and 3% of them die trying). Yes, many differences between the AT and Everest, but both absolutely require great will and physical stamina.
