Mice! - Appalachian Trail

Just for grins, which shelters do people think have the worst mouse problems? My candidate would be Pass Mtn. in 1999 - the pesky rodents were climbing all over us, nibbled at our fingers as we slept, and held drag races around the tin roof gutter and kept us all awake all night. The next year, however, when I got there I found a cat in residence. How’d that get there?

I was just at this shelter and read in the register that it was the most mice infested since those back in GA. So I prepared for a noisey night. Yes, there were a few but they stayed up in the rafters and never bothered me. My hiking buddy says that one ran across his hammock line during the night and he sent it flying. — In 2001 I found the biggest mice infestations to be in GA. There was a rat I believe at Cold Springs. Sue/HH

Hey HH,

Yeah, I sent one for the ride of his life and I saw one doing a rain dance out by the fire pit. Old Man brings to mind a great idea. Lets put a cat at every shelter.

To whom it may concern; I just received an e-mail from the family of General Ulysses S. Grant. He was found on the shore of a lake in Vermont after being gone for several weeks. For those hikers and friends that knew him the first half of our north bound AT hike last year I am truely sorry to pass the info to you. He played a big part in keeping The Apple Dumpling Gang together with his off brand humor. Like the time he whipped out a foot long Blimpie at Roan Mt. when we all had crumbs and said he didn’t think he could eat it all but he would try. In his memory please stand, salute and yell “ON TO RICHMOND!” Craig, I’m the one who woke you up at Double Spring Shelter telling you to quit snoring, not Shawn. I’m sorry.

Good news about the senate vote. I’d have to say Lamberts Meadow was where a rat wanted to eat my sleeping bag with me in it! Then there’s that rat hole just north of Laura Woodward Shelter(?) that I did not stay at out of Front Royal. I forget name of the shelter… Then in Mass. you get the porkies… Heck mice are angels! Except for the ones who ate my earphones, but in retrospect they just wanted me to hear nature. -Goin’ hippy

Bushwack,

Sorry to hear about The General. If you would, please forward me the email from his family.

I met him at his inspection station near Woodstock Vermont.

My worst encounter with porkies was about 30 years ago at the old Peru Peak Shelter in Vermont. They were bold and got into everything. Back then I carried a bar of ivory soap. (Long before Mountain Suds and Leave no trace). Anyway, one porkie even ate the bar of soap.
