I love guidebooks and maps, but for the JMT i wouldn’t bother. There’s so much info online, and really all you need to do is follow the trail and have a blast. There’s camping everywhere. If you’re out in typical summer season, there’s water everywhere. Get the Tom Harrison map pack, even though it has several small errors. They’re good visual maps, and will show your climbs and water sources and elevations and junctions. That will be all you need. (if you even need that.)

For mileages and lots of other useful info, go to alumni.caltech.edu/~rbell/JohnMuirTrail.html.gz .

It’s a download now instead of a normal web page.

I have our daily mileage and elevation profiles on my photo journal of our JMT hike in 2007. www.wannabp.smugmug.com It might be interesting to you. I agree with markv that you don’t need a guide book. The Tom Harrison maps are great.
