i don’t know what journal yer discussing, some folks put a weeks worth of miles in one days post. however, unbelievable milage is possible. Many hike 40+ miles depending on their motivations. my best big mile day was 30 and i still had loads of daylight and loads of strength. I could have walked into the night and possibly done many many more. I had friends do 35 and they were beat. It just depends on motivation.
good luck on yer upcoming hike.

I just went through a bunch of the currently hiking journals and checked on stats. There are many that have their longest day over 30. Most have at least one day over 25 miles. One person had 39 as their longest day. 80 does seem extremely difficult if not impossible. I know one guy attempted to run across the Smokies in 24 hours (77 miles) but he had a support team and was not carrying any gear.

Some hikers do big mileage on the PCT sections where you can zone out and cruise. And there are hikers who do the 40-mile-plus four-state challenge (touching ground in VA>WV>MD>PA without stopping to camp). But 80 miles? Not without a little help from their friends!

that would have to be a jog. I remember hearing about Bob Marshall’s legendary 72 mile day (with packboard pack) backpack, and just saying “yeah, right”. But if you do the math, it really is possible at a vigorous pace (just inder a full out jog for twenty straight hours.
Yeah, right.

Squeaky hiked the Smokeys (77 miles) in 24 hours with no support in September of 2003!

Dwight Mc Carter- a National Park Ranger hiked across Great Smokey Mountains National Park, in one day. He started at Fontana shortly after 5:00 am. He did get off of the AT (and headed North East toward Cosby) before getting to Davenport Gap. I want to say that he was done prior to dark, but I am not certain. When I read this, I could not comprehend someone moving so fast…
