Miles on "offtime"

How many miles per month do you put in when you live your “civilized” life? IE, how many miles are enough to keep you happy, when off long trails?

I have a 3.6 mile woods loop right out my back door…it is nowhere near enough, but is all I can fit in on work days. On off days, 10-24 mile days are squeezed in at least once a week, twice if life allows. These are not enough miles to keep the craving at bay, and I find myself getting very testy after a week of low miles. Soon we will have not walking trails, but 200+ inches of snow…snow shoeing and skiing take its place. Better workout, lower mileage.

I actually track my miles every year and I average around 300 per year which is not nearly enough but I have other obligations.

I still hike a fair amount so probably do on average 30-40 miles a month of hiking.

I have also taken up running so probably log 20-30 miles a week doing that.

Since 1996 when I started keeping track, I’ve logged about 8,200 miles–and I’m sure I’ve cheated myself out of a few hundred that I neglected to record, or where I did “bonus miles.” Most but not all with a full backpack.

That averages to over 900 miles per year–and 2005 ain’t over yet. A big chunk of those miles went toward sectioning the AT '96>'03, much more than 2,175 as I did a lot of round-trippers. Most of the rest are concentrated in the Shenandoah National Park, Central VA, and Grayson Highlands regions.

I havent hiked less then 500 miles in a given year since 1998.

Most years are closer to 1200+

I still have down time, but that too at some level revolves around being outside, thank God!
