Mini-ipod - Appalachian Trail

read a news article on the web today. appple is relesing two new “mini” ipods for the price conscious. they come with flash memory instead of hard drive, so they are much much cheaper, but only hold about 120 to 240 songs. the 120 song model will be 99 bucks, and the 240 song model will be about 149 bucks. just perfect for price conscious people like me who couldn’t afford the 500 dollars models…thought some of you might want to klnow before you hit the trail this spring, as i understand a lot of hikers use them.

.78 ounces (inc builtin battery) and about the size of a lighter. Also no cable is usuall needed to hook one up to a computer as a USB plug is built in. I want one!:nerd

I have to say, I can’t see the advantage of this new ipod over some of the other mp3 players that are already on the market. For example, I just bought a Creatative Muvo TXFM.

  • It has the same memory size as the smaller of the new ipods (the 120 song model).
  • Weighs around the same (an ounce or two with battery)
  • costs in the same ball park (i think i paid 129).
  • Can get FM radio
  • Has a built-in mic for voice recording
  • and…a screen.

There are other equally good brands.

I bought this new mp3 player specifically for an upcoming hike. The voice recording option is the most important to me because I plan to use it to keep a journal. I tried making a few entries the other day and found that I really liked being able to “journal” and walk at the same time.

Just so I don’t seem too bias I should mention that I’m an apple fan otherwise but just don’t see the advantage of the this new line over existing (and therefore better tested) products.

The Muvos are really nice - the battery time is really long on just one AAA battery too. This may be easier to replace on the trail - unless you were planning to charge up in town but then you need to bring a cord.

The radio feature would be nice in some areas also.

  • iPods -

I have an iPod - 20GB - and I love it. I take it with me everywhere and you hardly notice you have it on you. It also has an optional earphone set that has a remote control attached so as you are hiking, etc you can change the volume, song, etc w/out taking it out of your pack. The 20GB is big as far as storage goes, but still very light weight.
