Monson to Katahdin

Does anyone know how many camping sites require a fee from Monson to Katahdin? If so, how much cash should I bring?

Also, what is the weather like up there right now? I plan on starting next week (June 1). Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Isn’t that pretty much the 100-mile wilderness? I was speaking to Earle Towne of The Cabin in Andover yesterday. He said it was raining. He also said he and Weary tried to go up White Cap mountain recently and were blocked by snow.

Bring LOTS of bug dope!! The black flies are VERY bad this year (at least in Vermont). It’s been a wet spring… just perfect black fly weather. I would rather take a beating than hike a 100 miles fighting black flies the whole way!!!

I maintain a section near White Cap, the Gulf Hagus rim trail. I was up two days ago, no snow left but lots of bugs. The only snow Ive seen lately is on Katadin. Just dress properly have some good bug dope and stay in your tent at night. I saw Lil Jacks coming down white Cap…said he was about 70 years old and this is his third time.

Jeff. M2K, as has been mentioned, is the 100 mile wilderness. BEAUTIFUL walk and all for free. The exception is if you stay at the White House Landing. If you can afford it and want a break I recomend it highly.

The hundred mile wilderness is free, but don’t forget about the campgrounds at Abol Bridge. There is a private one and a Park Service campground both of which ask for money. I don’t recall the exact amounts. I believe there is also a fee to stay in Baxter at Daisy Pond though I’m not sure on that one. Best thing to do is check one of the handbooks or with the ATC.

Beware the mosquito gauntlet from Cooper Brook to Rainbow Lake. Had to hike in coat, pants, hat, socks over my hands and bandanna tied around my face in 90 degree weather. We were there June 14-15 2002.
