Montrail Moraine

I was at an outdoor store the other day and someone tried to sell me a pair of Montrail Moraines. Just wondering if anyone’s had any experience in them. Other than the fact that they’re HUGE they seem like they’d give great ankle support. Just wondering if the support is worth the 2lbs per boot?

I’ve had a pair for two years now and really like them, though they are heavy as bricks. They’re probably overkill for many trails, but if you hike in areas like the White Mtns with lots of sharp, pointy rocks, they’re great. They are also the first boots that really fit my feet which are very wide across the toes and very narrow at the heels. I have read that some folks found them very uncomfortable, so YMMV depending on the shape of your foot. They’re not for everyone but I’m glad I bought them.

Do you like cinder blocks on your feet 'cause that’s what you’ll get. If’n you want a supportive boot try L.L.Bean Crestas. Bramble has those. Light-er and mid boot stiff, many widths. Can’t fall over with big boots, like a Weeble. No more face plants for HH.

I didn’t land on my face this latest time, I landed on my elbow, which in turn jammed up into my shoulder, tearing a muscle and screwing up my perfectly nice rotator cuff. I liked it just the way it was. Now it hitches and it’s very annoying.
How was the Maryland challenge, or did you do that yet? You gonna come visit me on the trail next year???

Hi. I hiked in a pair of Moraine ATs for the first part of my AT thru-hike last year, and they were very stiff and gave me feet all sorts of problems. I would definitely recommend a lighter weight boot such as Kayland.

OW!, that’ll leave a mark. I thought you learned how to fall with style. Didn’t we cover that? Maryland was a riot. Never again. We were seeing pixies by mile 35. Strider asked if we saw the money playing the piano. Light break in on the Crestas. You can always send them back if you wear them around the house only. My Asolo 535s are nice but too narrow. Firm after 1000+ miles.

I started off in Moraines last year and was just stubborn enough to wear them all the way to SNP–850ish miles. They’re great boots, I never had a single blister, but they’re way too heavy for long distance hiking and I’d end up with VERY sore feet by the end of a long day because they have very little flex. So I switched to Merrell trail shoes and my foot soreness ended immediately. Now the only time I wear my Moraines is if there’s snow on the ground. Oh, did I mention it took me six months to break 'em in wearing them every day? That was a pain in the ass, but they still fit better than any boot I’ve ever had!
