This is a continuation of the first post on the forum… I thought it would get a little more attention if I posted it again.
Sue… you said you have your boxes done now? Aren’t some of your foods going to get at least a little stale?
Everyone… Exactly how well did bread and cheese hold up while getting shiped. Any moldy breads or oily cheese? I’m intersted in how begels hold up to be specific. I love my begals. I realize to get hard cheese but have never let a block of cheese sit in a dark, warm box for a week and a half then try to eat it.

Scott, I’ll try to answer this the best I can. But my system is obvously different from Hamockhngr’s. I’m having my boxes shipped 1-2 weeks before I pick them up, and the initial plan is to have all that I’m gonna eat in 'em. simple. A big pain? I say nah (now). Bagels are indestructable if they’re the unrefrigerated types. Look at their best if used by dates. Most of em sit in the store longer than I’ll need them to sit in my box. Homemade breads should last longer. Let the loaves thaw in the box I’m thinking… As for cheese, I guess it depends on the type. The harder the better. But then you can take velveeta and since it is packed in sealed foil, that will last in the box and week on the trail. These are legit concerns. I recommend the old school Ed Garvey book to give you a reassuring idea. “Appalachian Hiker II” is the name. Also, I think it’s in the packing. Pack things with care and make sure everything is sealed etc. etc… Should be fine… -Sweeper

A lot of people like to pack their food in bulk, ie: a pound of rice for x number of days. I pack each dinner individually. This is just a sampling of my box contents: film, batteries, TP, wet wipes, re-fills for my personal hygiene bag, X number of dinners needed to next PO stop. Ie: tomatoe basil rice w chicken TVP, 4 mayo packets Chicken Not Salad mix w/extra dried celery & onion, Knorr pesto sauce mix, homedried tomato mix, just to name a few. Two packets of dried hummus, 2 packets dried tabouli, Gatorade, cookies w/a one year or longer sale date (wow, talk about preservatives). I will buy all my cheeses, breads, fresh fruits & veggies locally. Sometimes my hubby will throw in some salami or cheese just before he mails the box. Does this shed any light on things??

The bagels mold when sitting in the bag, maybe not in the closed box where they can get some air. I’d get them in town even though the stores are going to rip us off. Cheeze too. The mold can be cut off the cheeze and wont hurt you. That’s the good stuff on Brie. Hey Sue, you copying our menu or what? We have almost the same goods. How cool. Keep it fresh and varied. And you lose the cemicals when we home dry. I couldn’t pick any basil to dry this year, it went to seed and got bitter. I’m very bummed. My dried pesto is to die for. Same adds as Hammockhngr, just don’t forget to insure them to get a tracking number. That just might be box you HAVE to have. Half Halve?
