Hello again-- Well, I am confirmed for our trip this summer. We will leave around June 15th-planning for 6 weeks. There are 6 of us: me, my wife, one of her sisters, and 3 of her brothers. From what I understand, snow has been light this year (so far) so we shouldnt have much trouble with snow fields, and starting early in the season should help out with water supplies… Do you think 3 liters per person would be enough to make it through the dry areas? I am still waiting to recieve the data book- I expect that will be helpful. I understand that the temperatures vary greatly out in the rockies-- What kind of lows could we expect this summer?- The higher elevations have lots of wind and so the chill factor is important to consider. Also, Do you know if white gas was available in the main towns? Also, any Ideas about transportation from Durango back to denver? I havent seen any fool proof ideas on the website and such,… Im sure i’ll think of more questions as I continue to plan…
Thanks Justen

I’ve got some ideas about all your ?s, but I’ll leave them to be answered better by an alumni CT thru-hiker with exception to your last one. Transportation to Denver from Durango can be done in a variety of ways, but the one I think I’ll end up doing is Greyhound ($55, $49 dollars 7 days advance) leaves 8:20am on Tuesdays (not sure of the schedule on the other days, may be the same), arrives in Denver 7:15pm. The bus station is 0.75 miles from the hostel in downtown durango. If your flying out of Denver, there are 3 hostels all within walking distance of the bus station in denver. You can hop a bus to the airport too.

I didn’t have any problems finding white gas along the trail. The only problem I did have was finding just enough for my fuel bottle. I guess with 6 of you it will work out well, but I would suggest that if you buy a large amount you ask whoever you buy it from if you can leave the rest for other hikers as they come through. I was able to do this in a couple of towns as I hiked through.
