Any of us who have been around the online trail community for any amount of time have had our own run-ins with Mr. Bruce. I used to let him get me upset with his tactics, but in recent years, I’ve just decided to ingnore him. I’ve considered signing up for Trailplace again (I too have been banned for disagreeing with Wingfoot), but in the end, decided it wasn’t worth the frustration. There are plenty of other, much better run sites available where you can hear a variety of opinion. In the end, these are much more valuable.
The only thing that still gets me upset about Wingfoot, is when the media (Backpacker Magazine and others) quote Wingfoot as “the recognized authority” in all things regarding Thruhiking. I have let them know my displeasure with this and pointed out that for a magazine, supposedly in tune with hikers, they should be more aware of the high degree of controvery surrounding Wingfoot.
Otherwise, let’s not beat this dead horse again. If someone wants to participate in his community, they will soon learn the limits and costs extracted. He certainly doesn’t do a very good job at hiding his very opinionated veiws.

I read thru most of the discussion and had no problem with what Wingfoot had to say. Did I miss something?
The only “weird” thing was his dogged persistence in refuting every argument, I don’t neccessarily agree with his point but everyone is entittled to an opinion.
Actually the only thing that I saw that was bothersome was his advertisement for Wesley Clark for president on the front page. I don’t know much about Wesley Clarkes politics but I generally think that politics should be avoided in these types of forums.:boy

Take a look at this:

and compare that to the end of the thread at it looks now.
But, Lyle’s right, to be honest. Horse, dead, beaten.

While I have neutral feeling about Wingfoot and had posted my journal to his site when I hiked in 2000 I think yuo have to remember this: Wingfoot at on time was THE authority on the AT and was producing an annually updated guide back when hardly anyone was doing it and at the time his was better than anything out there. In recent years there are much better sources but he still puts out a pretty good product. If nothing else it gives us all something to bitch about as we hike up yet another steep hill he neglected to tell us about.
Big B
Besides censoring my trail name it’d be nice if he include where all the beer filled springs are in the Wingatorium. I mean, dude, you said Fingerboard Shelter spring was dry in the summer. I saw found no less than three 20ozers that cruel hot summer long ago. Sure helped the throbbing from that compound fracture I got in my neck but I need data.

I posted the following message to wingnut at trail****ingnuthouseplace.com
He banned me.
Big surprise, eh?
By no means do I want to get into it with you again. You and I have discussed our differences and, I think, with mutual respect, agreed to disagree on related and unrelated items.
That said, I respectfully ask your opinion on the following question:
Given your assertion that there is not an official governing body that has chosen to define the term “thru-hiker”, what body or person has the authority and ability to define said term, and by what charter were they granted said power to define aforementioned term?
That said, A.L.D.H.A., as published by the ATC, defines the term thru-hiker as;
“…Thru-hiker–On the A.T., a hiker who is hiking from Maine to Georgia or Georgia to Maine in one trip, or, generally accepted, a person who has done same. Also ‘Thru’…”,
As this definition that very closely matches your own, I am left to wonder how and why you don’t accept and rely upon their granted authority for the physical footpath to extend to this specific term. A.L.D.H.A., in mutally agreed to collaboration with the ATC, has traditional and social acceptance as having authority over the trail, not trailplace.com or The Center for Appalachian Trail Studies. By saying this, I am not negating the efforts put forth by you or the Center, rather asking for clarification.
If it is your assertion that your definition of this term applies only to and for use on this specific website, then, obviously, this is to be respected while conversing with you, any Center for Appalachian Trail Studies volunteers or other staff, or any discussions facilitated by the use of trailplace.com.

OK, so that said, there’s some history that’s behind his current long-standing beef with ALDHA. I don’t think it’s right that I aire these things, as it’s stuff that is…
…19 years old. There are people hiking the trail that aren’t as old as wingnuts whacko prejudice against ALDHA.
I told him tonight that he should consider retiring and that the trail community would be more cohesive, if not better, if he did.
We only have another 5 years to look forward to. After that, he’ll be dead and gone and we won’t have to deal with his nutcase rants and totalitarian viewpoints.

Wingnut’s guide isn’t all that, either. It’s more and more inaccurate the more he takes corrections over the phone and not by personal experience.
