I just finished a hike from Sonora Pass to Tuolomne Meadows and wanted to report that this notoriously mosquito infested area had only a few spots where they gathered in mass. The conditions reflect the dry year (water was not a problem though).
Given that this area is usually one of the worst for mosquitoes in the Sierra, it should be relatively bug free hiking for anyone planning on heading out on the JMT soon, even in the usual bad spots.
This section was much less crowded than the JMT. It’s beautiful, but the climbs and descents are graded more steeply. There was a definite price to pay for the solitude.
