Are mosquitos present in August on the JMT? I am trying to decide if I will need to bring a bug net for the tarp.
Thanks for your responses.

We started the JMT in mid August '97 and had our share of these buggers. I think it was Mather Pass we were climbing and, at the lower elevations, we couldn’t stop to rest because of the mosquitos. Very gald to have had a tent. Other areas weren’t a problem at all but be prepared.
Have a great hike!!

I’ve been hiking throughout the Sierra for many, many years now, and have hiked the JMT in August twice. Most years I’ve had no problem with bugs in August except at low elevation near water or swampy areas. I usually just hike through those areas quickly and camp at higher elevation, which I prefer anyway. Unfortunately, I suspect this year will probably be different, due the the quantity of snow and the relatively late melt. Although the snow is melting fast, if things haven’t dried out by the time you hike, you may find lots of bugs. I would bring the bug net to be prepared, and plan to camp in higher, more open areas. Enjoy your hike – the late melt will probably mean lots of beautiful wildflowers!
