About to leave for yosemite in a couple days! Was not planning on bringing a headnet, but ran into an old friend who did the trail in '02 and suggested it. Anyone know what the mosquito situation is like this year, or have opinions on whether a headnet will be necessary in the last couple weeks of June?

thanks!

The mosquito situation changes from year to year and from month to month (earlier summer is always far worse then late summer). That said, in this low snow year, mosquitos are likely to be less intensive then in recent years.

However, you will always encounter swarms of them in various places. I had to cut several food breaks short during memorial day weekend in Yosemite due to them not leaving me alone. And when I got home, I discovered bites in places that I didn’t know I had been bitten.

For .5oz, a headnet is a safe investment that will not be noticable in your pack. I never go to the Sierras without one.

…bring a few pints of replacement blood. Your choice.

I was in Yosemite hiking Half Dome in late May. It’s been a dry year. We did not have any mosquito problems at all. I don’t know about the rest of the JMT. Hope this info. was useful.
